New Exhibit Space

SHHS Trustees and The Wharf Shop's Gwen Waddington recently worked out a wonderful arrangement to provide a new home for the historic display case previously used in the Wharf Shop.

Wharf Shop customers will remember that the five foot case was previously used to display scrimshaw gifts in the store. SHHS Co-President Jack Youngs arranged to have Twin Forks Moving and Storage help us move the case down the street to the Annie Cooper Boyd House. SHHS member Joe Zaykowski Jr. graciously volunteered to help us take parts of the case apart to help with the moving process. Joe has also agreed to help us figure out how to get the pieces through our front door safely, so the case can be reassembled.

The case was purchased in 1924, and was originally used in Cook's Department Store, according to the Wharf Shop ladies. The back is filled with small drawers for storage. SHHS has previously used cabinets and drawers for displays, like our Alvin Silver Company mini-exhibit and the previous exhibits on Annie Cooper Boyd's pressed seaweed collection.

We are grateful for the Wharf Shop's donation, and we hope to use the case for upcoming exhibits and displays, including this summer's Long Island Railroad Exhibit and the William Cooper boatshed tools.
