Happy Birthday John Steinbeck!

Today's Google Doodle is in honor of John Steinbeck's 112th Birthday. John Steinbeck moved to Sag Harbor in 1955, and his widow Elaine remained a prominent force in cultural circles in Sag Harbor until her death.

John Steinbeck is a particularly important figure in establishing Harborfest, which has also been called the Old Whalers' Festival and The Sag Harborfest. This event, designed to celebrate Sag Harbor's Whaling History, just celebrated a 50th anniversary this fall. Steinbeck used his prestige and connections from writing speeches for President Johnson to arrange for dramatic Coast Guard demonstrations and international whaleboat races. Every year during Harborfest, at least one event to commemorate John Steinbeck's life and work occurs. Steinbeck's commitment to Sag Harbor continues to be a model for many newcomers today.

In honor of Steinbeck's Sag Harbor life, here is a video touring his property on the cove. While the video's creator acknowledges some historical errors, it is a beautiful tour of the place where John Steinbeck worked in Sag Harbor.
