Great Resource for Homeowners in the Historic District
Friday, May 10, 2013
The village of Sag Harbor is unique because of our Historic District. Our Historic District, which covers a large portion of the village, is on the National Register of Historic Places. This huge honor requires a community effort to support and sustain the historic character of our village. The Sag Harbor Historical Society plans to offer links and resources as we move forward to help homeowners in the Historic District understand some of the national standards for historic places and historic preservation. Locally, our Historic Preservation and Architectural Review Board handles issues related to historic preservation and structures in the historic district. We hope that helping people in the Historic District get information about guidelines for historic preservation and historic structures, we will be able to help remove some of the mystery from the process of upkeep required to keep our historic district livable. Please expect to see links in the future related to standards and guidelines for things like coping with extreme weather. The guidelines we will share will be from reputable sources, like the National Trust, the New York State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) or the National Parks Service (which establishes the criteria for historic places to be eligible for the National Register). One of the main resources we will draw from are resources related to the Secretary of the Interior's "Standards for Rehabilitation," and the Technical Service materials produced to support and clarify those standards. To kickoff these links, we would like to share the link to "Interpreting the Standards" Bulletins from the National Park Service, which cover smaller issues many building owners may encounter in the Historic District, such as how to handle porch repairs, or how to address deteriorating plaster inside a building.
